Cambodian Conference on Vatican II

5-7 January 2013

As part of the Year of Faith, Bishop Olivier Schmitthaeusler called a three-day conference for all three dioceses in Cambodia to learn and discuss some of the ideas of Vatican Council II.

Bishop Olivier addressing the conference

Tents for workshops
The conference was held in a 20-acre plot of land on the edge of Phnom Penh which has no buildings and is literally a cow pasture. The diocese just bought it and will create a diocesan center there. For this conference, numerous tents and shelters were set up, like these tents where various workshops were held.
Listening to speakers
About 1,000 Catholics from the various parishes and centers around the country participated. Each center brought a delegation that varied from 10 to 100, depending on the size of their community. Digital projection screens were set up and inside the large tent there were also large flat-screen monitors.
Proclaiming the gospel
The final moment of the conference was a liturgy after a video message from Pope Benedict was broadcast to all the people. Here the gospel is proclaimed for the group.
